On my 1996 Sable (Vulcon motor) I have a odd thing happening with the temp guage. It seems that the temp will go somewhat high and they cool down pretty quickly. Almost as if the t-stat will open all the way or not at all? There does not seem to be a middle ground.

Is there some variable control on the t-stat or other part that may be failing? Anyone seen this behavior? Coolant etc. levels are ok.

Thanks,
Mike

I swapped the water pump even though the one I had on was fine. Previous owner must have replaced it recently. The therostat change solved the fluctuation temp and overheat on the dash guage.

Still no heat though. As far as I can tell right now all the hoses get hot. Must be a heater core or something else?

Also, the previous owner must have had a short serp. belt installed that is not utilizing the idler pulley. As far a I can tell it is not making a difference. Any thoughts?

does the belt round a tensioner pulley?

pittmike 04-04-2008 06:31 AM

yes it does, just not the idler pulley. that does noy seem to be connected to anything that needs to turn?

Is the idler pulley seized or does it spin freely? If the serp is not routed correctly you could actually be spinning the warer pump backwards. As for the heat, are both heater hoses hot? Let me know.

The heater is fine now after flushing the core. Very little gunk came out but I guess it was enough. The water pump spins correctly and the idler spins freely. Someone just replaced tthe belt with a shorter one and completely left the idler unused?

If you go to the settings option at the top of the screen and disable WYSIWIG you will get rid of all the extra mumbo jumbo on your entries. Cool your prob is fixed. Actually not cool, cause you got heat now. LOL! Must have been that piece of gunk that was clogging the core. Still baffled by the short belt though. Why did someone go through the process of measuring up a shorter belt if you need only tell the parts guy if the car has a/c or not for the right length. Hey if it works it works. Good luck.

thanks for the tip on the formatting.

I have no idea why someone would get a short belt either?
