96 VSS issues that don't go away
 

Hello. My wife's car has this issue of going through VSS sensors.

Some background. Bought off a good friend that took great care of it. Had the trans rebuilt, and also had me do alot of work to the car. He was having the issues as well. Speedo would go bonkers, not work. Finally it seem as he got it fixed, but then he let it sit around. I offered to buy it to replace my wife's lease turn in.

I've had it for 2 years. I've replaced the harness, plus about 2 feet of wire and a new VSS. Cured it for a while. Trans started to shift funny. Check engine light never goes away. Only code, VSS. Tonight wife says her car is acting up. I take it for a spin. When I hit 2nd gear, I squawked the tire. WOW. Like it's got a massive shift kit. Now I don't believe this car has ABS. Never went in depth with it. I know if it does, the signal has to travel through the ABS module. It's been an awesome car, all except this VSS problem. Maybe there is suppose to be a heat shield to protect this sensor? Maybe if so, it was forgotten upon reinstallation of the trans? Maybe someone has seen this problem before and knows right where I need to look. I did notice this evening, the gear on the speed sensor had 3 chipped teeth, all in different locations. I'm gonna replace that tomorrow to see if that helps. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, now the car won't move unless you give it a bit of gas. Feels like a brake is stuck, or it's starting in OD. Or a band is applied that shouldn't be.
