I have a 96 mercury sable sedan. Recently the air conditioning has randomly been stopping. The air conditioning will then kick back in just as cold as before. It is the blowing that is at issue not the cold. Any ideas on what is causing it and how to fix it?

Thanks.

Check the resistor on the blower motor. It is underneath the dash on the passenger side. It is about 2 x 4 inches and has wires running to it. Good luck

I had a similar problem about three years ago. Ended up that the factory compressor and clutch were slowly failing.

At first the clutch would get stuckrandomlybut then it would beconstantly engaged. I never really knew what the A/C would perform like. I was hoping it was only a matter of needing freon but I wasn't so lucky. ;)

Anyway, after getting an entirely new compressor/clutch from Auto Zone installed I have not had the same problem. The only thing I'm dealing with now is that a generic type might not be as efficient as the original Mercury one and it completely zaps my engine energy!

Still, I'd rather have a working A/C than not though!

I have seen a few instances where the shield that goes over the cabin air filter (located under the cowl panel) has cracked and water gets into the blower motor.
