The lines are on the inner surface of the glass. Proper tint installers usually put strips over the defroster lines before installing the tint itself. This helps keep the tint from melting to the lines and/or damaging the lines if the tint is pulled off again. I haven't actually seen this type of installation done on any vehicle except one, and have yet to see any lines actually damaged by the tint. Now some monkey with a razor peeling the old tint off may break a defroster line. In my opinion, if the defroster works before they start work, and they break it... they bought it. If they won't guarantee their work not to damage the vehicle, I'd go somewhere else and get it done right.
