I have an 02 Sable GS that I bought in 02 as an exec driven car. It now has 75K and has been a good car except it has always handed bumps noisily. Nothing significant has ever needed to be replaced (most service done by dealer). Does this model simply have a weak/noisy suspension or does my car need some kind of repair?

if the suspension noise has slowly gotten worse, you might need new control arm bushings, but from what I remember about my mom''s 2001 taurus, they''re just noisy.

now if you hear rattles after hitting a bump, that may indicate that your shocks are wearing out. I usually don''t hear of OEM shocks wearing out in 75K unless it''s mostly driven on rough roads.

I think they had different grades of suspension on these too.... My 97 sable LS is pretty nice and quiet compared to the better half''s 2000 Taurus GS..


The sway bar end links are something else that wear on these from time to time...

I''m the one with the noisy 02 Sable. It doesn''t rattle going over rough spots - more thudding, like there isn''t isn''t enough travel in the suspension or it''s too stiff. While it probably has gotten worse over time, it seems like it always been this way.

I''ll have the control arm bushings checked but Sly said his Mom''s car was just noisy and maxfax3 said his better half''s car was also noisy. My wife is the primary driver of our Sable (I drive a Saturn). Maybe the cause of all our problems is a woman driving a base model car. I read in another posting that an owner found Sensatrac
shocks and struts made a big difference. Assuming they are better grade than whatever''s OEM on a GS, I may bite that bullet and see if it reduces, if not eliminates, the noise. Seems like it can''t hurt, other than what it may cost.

Sounds like you just might need struts but you really need to have the front end checked out. There are so many parts that can wear out (links, centerlink, a-arm bushings, tie rods, ball joints) to name a few. At 75K and if your wife doesn''''t beat on it, I am thinking struts.Edited by: conan312

I can say that the gabriel gas shocks/struts are much better than the sensatracks. my wife''s crown vic rides much better with the gabriel shocks than the sensatracks that were on there and when I had my 94 topaz, I put gabriel struts on the front and it rode better than the OEM after that. Personal bias of course. I do know that gas filled usually work better than oil filled (which sensatracks are).
