Sable 2001
 

I own a 2001 Sable LS Premium with 35,000 miles. I've had to have 5 coil spring replaced on the car in the last several years. 1 was replaced about 3 years ago and all 4 had to be replaced a few months ago.

Anybody else had problems like this. Ford refused to do anything about it and didn't admit or deny and part defect, but there is no doubt that the springs are defective in or by design.

never heard of anyone having issues with the coils.

Do you have to drive through rough roads often? If so, it could just be excess wear due to road conditions. What exactly was the reason for the replacement? Were the coils sagging (car riding lower to the ground than it should) or did a coil break? I would say that a break would be grounds for defect replacement. Sagging is a harder issue to nail down and other members may have more ideas on that.

Ford has has some crappy coil springs in the last several years.. Doesn;t seem to be isolated to the Taurus/Sable either.. Countour/Mystique, T-Bird/Cougar, Taurus/Sable all seem to be affected.. I can blame some of it on crappy PA roads but most of the cars I've had in here with broken springs are under 100K.. I believe some of the issue can be blamed on cheap steel, the rest has to do with the plastic coating they put on the springs.. The coating gets cracks very early in life which allows moisture to get in there and basically rust the spring till it gets weak and breaks..

The best bet seems to be replace the factory springs with aftermarkets.. The Moog and TRW springs seem to be holding up just dandy... They are only painted instead of plastic coated..

Knock wood none have broken on my '97 but the rear sags something fierce.. Which is another common issue...

All of the coils broke which of course sounds like a defect to me. I drive mainly in the city, or on highway. No rough roads or anything like that.

Sounds like with so many breaks that is it a mounting alignment problem.

typical around here... i see many Escorts, Tempos and Taurus with busted springs and people dont like to pay to have them replaced.

Just the opposite here on the east coast. I really can't recall ever seeing a "broken" spring. All I ever see is hundreds of Continentals sitting on the ground from blown air suspension bladders. And the funny thing is the younger kids will keep driving them or even buy them like that cause it looks like a low rider. LOL!

With the mix of crappy roads and salt we get a fair share of broken springs here in PA.. Normally it seems to be on cars floating around 75 - 100K though.. I've seen a few cases on the Taurus/Sable & Windstar where the bearing in the strut mount binds which I suspect doesn;t help with spring life either..
