Sorry if this question has already been asked but i was having trouble figuring out how to work the search function.

ok, i'm having a hell of a time getting to the three plugs on the backside of the engine. I own a 1999 mercury sable LS DOHC. The three in the front were easy. I've located the three in the back but find it impossible to get to the plugs with my hand, let alone get a socket wrench in there. So should something be removed to make them eaiser to get too?

Thanks so much for your time.

i dont know if it is anything like a Chevy car with a v-6, but try to rock the car and see if the engine moves to give better access. if it does have a helper block the wheels in the position you need to have more clearance.

Reference both Haynes and Chilton manuals. Cheaper than mechanic.

Basically, the intake manifold needs to be removed for access.

I have an O5 DOHC Duratec and from inspection, both intakes need to be removed to access the plugs. Change the Upstream O2 sensor while accessable.

</>I came across a similar Q and a Tech answer:
ADDED: As I've advised, you will need to remove the upper intake plenum to access the spark plugs on bank #1 cylinders The only tools needed for this are a 5/16" socket with suitable extension and 10mm for the two EGR valve bolts if you don't have the 1-1/16" wrench for the EGR tube. The gaskets between the two should be reusable, unless it is absolutely oil soaked and squished, which even if, they aren't expensive.

Also should give access to Upstream O2 sensor Bank 1.

BTW: Duratec30 is an aluminum engine.

When changing plugs or torquing bolts on this engine best heed torque values. If plugs are over torqued they may be blown out of the head. Fixable but bummer.

Ford Workshop Manual is the best source of HowTo. Google year and Ford Workshop Manual to see what is available.

I purchased one on the net delivered for $48 for 05 Taurus/Sable.

Basically, removal of the Upper Intake Manifold includes the attached TB.

Not a big deal.
