Just picked up my car from Car-X and they told me that my 1999 Tracer has # 4 cylinder internal damage and that # 1 and # 4 cylinder have no compression.

My wife was pulling into a parking spot when all of a sudden it just died. She said there was no jolt or jump or loud noise, just died. When you started the car after that it only stays on for a split second and is very loud.

They want to charge me $2400 for a used 30day warrenty engine with 80,000 miles. I thought they where trying to screw me so I just picked it up and now it sits.

My question...finally...is. Can this engine be rebuilt and how much would that cost on average. Or do I have to get a new engine. Which would be best. Her engine has 90,000 miles on it. Thank you

I think a do-it-yourself rebuild would be worth the 500-700 dollars

wonder if a freeze plug blowed out?

I dont even know whata freeze plug is... but we are going to by a new car now, because the cost to fix hers is to much.

You ought to be able to buy a used 99 Tracer for that much. Mine has 150,000 on it. One busted power steering hose and one Air Conditioning control relay. Thats it, plus gas and oil. Still runs like new. Oh, the plastic head light housings are going south.

I had the same thing happen to my 1997 Tracer a few years back. Only about a year after I bought it in 2001 I ended up purchasing an engine from a wreck yard for $400 that only had about 30,000 and found a repair shop who only charged me $600 to do the swap.

I think you could either find someone who could do this cheaper for you or spend that $1000 to invest in a newer car.

I still drive this same Tracer and it is running great (with the second engine mentioned above)but I have replaced and or serviced almost every part in the last two years. They do seem to take alot of maintenance to keep them running well unfortunately.
