hey guys.. i have a 1993 mercury tracer LTS it has a 1.8l dohc and is a 5 spd.. when i got the car i got it for only 300 from my sisters friend.. he said nothing was wrong wiht it.. but as i drove it down the road.. it started acting funny.. and well when u engage the clutch the slace cylinder should push out and stay out until the clutch is disengaged... well on my car the slave cylinder will push out but even when the clutch is still to the floor the slave cylinder will start to pull back slowly.. so when im at a stop sign i cant put it in first and hold the clutch in.. i have to keep it in Neutral and wait for the light to turn then chnaged gears and take off fast or the car jumps forward and dies since the slave cylinder realeses. the slave cylinder is brand new. the clutch is brand new as well. and we bled the slave cylinder about 5 different times and with everytime the problem never got any better.. i was thinking it was the throwout bearing but im not too sure if anyone oculd hel it would be much appreciated

This should be a simple problem and I'm surprised that no one has replied to your quesiton. It looks like you focused at the slave cylinder and have done work there. Have you tried the Master cylinder?? Next question I have is how often are you adding fluid to your clutch resevoir?? Or are you having to do that?? If you are having to add fluid, I suspect a leak in your master cylinder or the line from there to the slave cylinder. I'm not certain on the exact location for the master cylinder on this vehicle, but on my MR2-it was above the clutch pedal linkage under the dash. I noticed fluid right away on my carpet area there when I went underneath. I had very similiar problems as you mentioned and I also attacked the slave cylinder first. The best of luck on finding your problem and fixing it. It should be a quick, cheap, and easy repair.

Dana has got a good point also the master cylinder is right below the reseivor near the fender. also check the slave cylinder sometimes it does not hold pressure it could be bad, can u hear a hydraulic leak sound when ur car is running when you press in the clutch? i had the same problem if you cant figure it out call me 530 276 7657 im always willing to help i also have a 93 mercury tracer 1.8.
