00 mercury villager


At times, my villager will run very rough (almost stalling) and the check engine light will flash. This used to only happen when the engine got wet (car wash or very rainy day). It's not doing it more often and when dry.


The problem is....the problem is not consistant and when it stops, the check engine light goes out as well! I've dropped this off for service before and they could not find a problem. Any ideas what could cause this? Ever see it before?

I have a '00 Villager and it's doing the same exact thing. Last week I took it
in to be looked at and it was running smooth as could be. The engine codes
that come up are for knock sensor and O2 sensor, but we couldn't confirm.
If I find out what it is, I'll pass it on. Anyone else having this issue?

BTW, since I got it back last time it was fine, but I went and got a car wash
today and now it's just awful. Thanks for helping me tie the water issue in.

Sorry, I see this post is old, but I just had work done for a similar problem with my 2000 Mercury Villager Estate.

My issue was when starting the engine would sputter and run very rough. After about 1 minute, it would even out and idle fairly normally. Then, the problem started occurring after startup and the check engine light would come on. Then, it would even out and the light would go off. I tried a tune up, replacing the fuel pump, fuel filter, etc. to no avail.

The local shop diagnosed the problem as the fuel pressure regulator. The part was a little pricey ($175) but the shop said eventually the diaphragm in the regulator would have gone out and then I would have had a nice towing fee. Once changed out the problem has disappeared.

Thank you for posting this. I have noticed that my Villager Van (93) is doing this sputtering thing when I drive it for several hours and stop at an idle. (red light, stop sign) then the car lurches, sputters, check engine light comes on ... next day... it runs smooth as silk. I will need to check the pressure regulator.
