'93 mercury villager

Hello my '93 mercury villager we just bought runs great but everytime we start it up it turns over for along time before finally firing up, but when it is fired up it runs strong!! any ideas??

broken vacuum lines... worn plugs, wires, coils, etc. weak starter. Could be any number of things.

It could also be a battery with one weak or dead cell that can't give the proper amount of power by itself, but once the engine fires, the alternator kicks in and provides all the power needed. I'd start with the battery and rule out the electrical before delving into the hoses and such. I've driven vehicles for a long time with a battery that had a weak cell. hard to start, but ran great. You can really tell if this is the problem by paying close attention to how the engine sounds while cranking and if you put jumper cables to another car and it cranks faster, then it is definitely the battery.

The Battery is good i checked, I will check my hoses etc.. and see whaT I FIND OUT.
Thanks very much.

Does the engine turn over slowly or does it crank quickly and strong?

W01F 05-08-2009 10:53 PM

yes, but when it fires it runs strong then through out the day (engine warm) it starts quicker.

yes? so which one... slowly or quickly? if it's slow, it may be a weak starter.

If you meant slowly then faster over the course of the day, then maybe you should test for starter draw.

Ok i will check the starter. Also thank you guys for giving soe helpfull advice.

my Grand Marquis in my signature did this after buying it. it would crank for 4 or 5 seconds or longer before starting. it ended up being worn out plugs and wires. it was really bad with moisture in the air during or after a rain.
