1992 mercury cougar loss of power and a top end knock

I have a 1992 mercury cougar with a 3.8 v6 it seems too have lost power and has a top end knock/slap noise does anyone happen too know what it is and what caused it...

sounds like a oil pump going but hard to tell with out a little more description
