Power Steering issue on 1999 Cougar

Hi,





I have a 1999 Cougar with a Power Steering working some time to time..!~!!


For whatever reason, the power steering quits on me for any reason, and when it works it''s really noisy and it seems to come from the pump.





Any feedback would be appreciated.

You have a power steering pump that has failed. Replace the pump & seriously consider replacing the hoses too. The car is 10 years old & the lines will be deteriorated.

my car is 20 years old and the lines are fine. I just replaced the high pressure hose on my power steering pump this week because it was leaking from the compression (or so I thought) fitting at the pump. turned out it was probably the o-ring. next time I''ll know to replace the o-ring.

but yeah, if the pump is making noise like that, check the fluid level. if topping it off doesn''t make the noise go away, the pump is near dead (if not already) and needs to be replaced.
