Hi everyone. My wife has a 2001 Mercury Cougar that is experiencing a lot of squeaking and "creaking" noises coming from the front. It makes this noise when the car goes over a bump and it rocks from left to right, which I figure its either the shocks or the springs. Is this a common problem with these vehicles? If it is, what is the problem exactly?Edited by: brianm188

Hi I have 2001 Cougar as well and I''m experiencing the very same problem!! The squeaking noises are driving me nuts. I have replaced all four shocks (struts), boots-the entire assembly. This did absolutely nothing to alleviate the squeaking noise! I''ve also lubricated everything possible to lubricate, especially the anti-sway bar. This seemed to help for a few days and then it rained and the squeaks came back with a vengeance. I''m at my wits end and ready to schedule an appointment with the deal to see if there is anything that can be done to get rid of the squeaks. I''ll let you know if/when I take it to the dealer and if that was any help. Good luck, squeaks are very annoying. :-)

I had the same problem for about 6 months or so. Then one day suddenly one squeek stopped , then the other. I recently had my car on a lift to have th exhaust looked at and noticed that on the front wheel assembly there was a small bar on each sidethat were broken off and just dangling there. I think the technician said they were some sort of stabilizers....sway stabilizers of some sort. Anyway, I havenoticed only that when I am in a somewhat sharp turn and excelerating do I feel a slight vibration. Easy fix... just down step on the gas while turning hard. :-) So I came to the conclusion that the squeeking was these so called sway supports.

Hi yellowcougar76,

Thank for the information. My squeaks seem to be worse in cooler weather and I only can hear them when I''m driving at a very low speed and making a turn. I haven''t made an appoinment to have my car looked at yet, but I''m going to. I hope the dealer can resolve the squeaks once and for all.
