I got one for you, happened on my buddy's MGM last week.

After 100,000 miles, he wanted to have his transmission fluid changed on his '93 MGM.

As we know, transmission shuttering is a big issue on the old AODE and first built 4R70W ones. So he decided to spent $40 more and have the dealership do it. They still carry the MerconIII, which will be discontinued from 2007 on.

For about $140, they flushed and drained the whole thing (including converter), and refilled it with MerconIII.

Guess what: His car, which was driving perfectly before, now suddenly encounters the shuttering, it's always there (mainly at around 35 mph).

I think that maybe something came loose inside, some debris or else, when they flushed the transmission. I would not know how to explain such an immediate change. I drove the car the day before, and there was not the tiniest bit of anything with the transmission, it shifted perfectly.

Since he is pretty much screwed now, the cheapest solution was to do the conversion to MerconV, including gear 1 and 2 accumulators, new magnet, etc. etc. This would give him the idea on where he stands.

Another $150 later, he had to realize that, if he had not the fluid changed, he probably would have been just fine.

Sad story. So now we are shopping for a new torque converter.

Another supportive item toward "Don't touch a running system". Well, fluid changes are essential, and I would have done the same. It's just not right if you try to take care of things, and then get rewarded with something like that.
