Default 09 Grand Marquis electrical issue??

Just put a new battery in after auto parts store tested it and said it was no good. Within a couple of minutes, we could smell what I recognized as wiring or plastic heating up/burning. The battery was installed correctly, terminals are on the right post. We hadn't even started the engine, the keys were not even in the ignition. Any ideas on what to look for? Not in a position to take to a shop right now, but lost on what to check. Thank you!

are you asking if what burned or how to change the battery correctly?

The battery is installed correctly, we checked that immediately. I was wondering about how to find where the burning smell is coming from. When the battery is hooked up, and the wire that goes to the fuse box is connected, there seems to be a huge draw on the battery .The voltmeter read like 6 something. When we disconnected the fuse box, the voltmeter showed a reading of 12.4. I'm just concerned about checking fuses, etc. while the battery is connected, because something is getting very hot. Thanks for replying
