’92 GM a/c goes on & off

Thea/c only seems to work on cool days or when the car is first started. The a/c will cool but after stopping the vehicle and then accelerating the a/c will drop off and not come back.
Vehicle info: '92 Grand Marquis LS with auto climate control.
I have had one of the a/c internal switches replaced with no results. Seems to hold a charge ok.
