Default 98 mercury gm

Car drives fine. After going 50 miles or so,engine loses power. If I pull over and switch engine off and restart it. It runs normal for anothet 30- 50 miles. Then it does it again.
Any ideas will be appreciated. Thanks

Sounds like fuel starvation --
Change the Fuel Filter.
Part # = Motorcraft FG1114
Add a 20-ounce bottle of Chevron's TECHRON Fuel System Cleaner to a low tank, then fill it up.
The Techron will clean your system of water, varnish, and particles -- and it cleans the fuel injectors, too.
I add a bottle of Techron at every 5,000-mile oil change.
If the problem persists, check the fuel pressure -- you MAY need a new Fuel Pressure Regulator.
Part # = Motorcraft CM4861
Both parts available from RockAuto.com -- best prices, best selection.
The 95 MERC has a Mallory Adjustable Fuel Pressure Regulator -- set at 35 p.s.i. @ 750 rpms.

I would check for a fuel pump starting to break down by monitoring your fuel pressure. If your fuel regulator has a vacuum line, pull it off, if there is fuel present it is bad and will also make your engine run very rich. If no gas is present it is good. Remember, the fuel pressure regulator is there to keep the pressure from going too high..By restarting it, you are basically repriming the system.Pressure specs for your 98 is anywhere from 30-45 psi at idle.
