Default Cooling fan Issue 1998

1998 Grand Marquis

Im having an intermittent issue with my cooling fan. The fan will turn on when AC is on and will blow cold air but will eventually turn off and Ill be left with warm air blowing out of my vents.

Just bought this car and replaced the thermostat (which was missing from the car). I have not yet had any overheating issues. Not sure if the fan kicks on when idling with AC off. Ive waited 15 minutes and it never came on. The temperature dash gauge has never risen above half way.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Hello, Evan, and welcome to the Mercury Forums --
In order to diagnose cooling system/AC problems, it helps to know more about the car and it's operating conditions.
What model is it ?? How many miles on the clock ?? Any "modifications" ??
Where are you ?? What's the elevation ?? City or Highway driving ??

The correct thermostat for your '98 Marquis is the MOTORCRAFT # RT-1234.
Your electric fan is driven when the AC is "ON" and the temp is set at it's lowest (coldest) setting.
If the AC runs and blows cold air, your problem MAY be the "Actuator" that directs the air to the vents.
If the "Actuator" is bad, it's a royal pain to replace this item -- there are two (2) different part numbers for the door actuator.
The parts are different for the "Manual" and "Automatic" AC systems.
The part number for the MANUAL control is: MOTORCRAFT # YH1800 -- found on the GS models.
The part number for the AUTOMATIC control is :MOTORCRAFT # YH1776 -- found on the LS models.
You-Tube has videos on how to replace the door actuator.

Thanks for the reply.

Its a 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis LS. 118k miles. No modification to my knowledge.

The AC blows cold on full blast with Max AC on. When idling it will sometimes begin to blow luke warm air without any AC changes. I believe this is because the coolant fan will shut off when idling. I thought that this fan should remain On as long as Max AC is on and it is on full blast.

The cardinal rule among race car drivers, engine builders, and professional mechanics is:
Do not let an internal-combustion engine "idle". Period !!
Idling puts an extra load on the cooling system, the electrical system, and the oil temperature -- which is why severe-service vehicles are equipped larger cooling systems, oil coolers and high-capacity alternators and larger battery capacity. Your car doesn't have any of these, and is NOT prepared for periods of "idling".
Notice that your "Battery Voltage" gauge drops way down when engine is idling and AC is "On" -- Your electric fan MAY turn itself "off" due to the indicated low battery voltage during idling.
Besides, idling wastes expensive fuel (especially in that gas-guzzling V-8) and pollutes the air -- while accomplishing NOTHING!

I live in the desert, and drive throughout the deserts and mountains of the Western USA.
Top-performing AC is a MUST !!
My '95 Merc's AC system was rebuilt 6 years ago, using these selected parts:
New Motorcraft Compressor (with new clutch).
New Behr PAO Compressor Oil.
New 4 Seasons Accumulator-Drier.
New Severe-Duty Orifice Tube
New HNBR O-rings.
I got the AC parts at Amazon.com -- at GREAT prices !

Sitting at red lights and in crawling traffic with AC On is enough to overheat this engine. Is it that too much draw on the battery is shutting off both my fan and my AC compressor? Bad relay or temp sensor?

My cooling fan does not always come on when at a stop and will shuttoff randomly with AC On full blast. When im overheating, it always is at a light with AC blowers On but no longer blowing cold air and coolant fan Off.

Why is this happening? How do I troubleshoot?
