I have an 86 Grand Marquis and the engine just starts surging and I can't even kick it down. I just have to turn it off. It does it all the time at different times. The fuel light also comes on even when the tank is full and then goes off later. Does this year model have codes?

ill ask around work on monday and see if they will produce codes... If they do its going to be very minimal. In the mean time you may want to look for vacuum leaks or intake gasket leaks.

Sounds like something came apart in the tank maybe.

Hmmm, is it just like revving up?? Because mine will like revv up a few times when I satart it and stuff, but I don't know what causes that. I don't really understand what you mean by surging though. Could you go a little deeper into detail about what it's doing?? I just want to know if our engines are doing the same thing...

It'll just start revving and staying like that, even when I try to kick it down. I just have to shut it off or put it in gear, but it still wants to take off at that speed in gear.

Well, like mine will revv up when I start it, it eventually goes down but when I dr ive it, it revvs up. I'm not to sure why it does it. The only thing I thought is that some pump was going out and the engine was having to revv up to push the fluid through.

are you guys cars carbed or fuel injected? If carb sound like a chock problem, if injected a vac leak. Edited by: cctxfish

I think I'm going to give up on this car. Now all of the electric windows have decided to not work in consecutive days (104 degrees last two days)!

I'm not putting another dime into it. I'm now looking for a 80's mustang body with no engine for a project......

Huh, well, you say an 86 eh?? Have you junked the car yet?? What kind of condition is the body in?? My marquis is wrecked, and I need to find some new parts for it. Get back to me on that one.
