Noise in suspension when turning sharp left or right

I just bought a 98 grand marquis and I notice it makes a loud noise when you turn very sharp right or left at slow speeds, like when turning out of the drive way or out of a parking lot. I inspected the steering and suspension and it all appears fine. The only thing I seen was the boots were bad on the sway bar links and I replaced the passenger side and still the same noise.
Any ideas?

what type of noise is it? a squealing sound? a groan?

did you check the tension of the belt to the power steering pump?

also, if you hold the steering on the lock (extreme right or left) of any car, the power steering will groan about it.

Agreed it does sound more like a pop. I made the car do it again today on purpose and it actually sounds like the coils springs making a pop. Im not sure as I cannot see any damage on the front end.

I'm pretty sure of what your describing.

It is the turn stop's, you need to apply some grease to both halfs on both sides. I'll try to find a picture to show you what I mean

The dirty lookin parts are the one's that need to be greased

I've tried that on mine. didnt help. My noise is only on the left and clunks like a loose part during full left with a bump(doesn't have to be a big bump, a 1 inch stick will do it). Sounds more like a loose part.
I don't think it was there before replacing 4 ball joints , and half the tie rod ends.

slymer 02-22-2010 08:59 PM

sounds like you may have a ball joint that's not greased properly then or is defective.

rustyoldford97 02-23-2010 10:21 AM

Defective ball joint, dang,
changing those bums was a real project. The press I rented didn't really seem to have the proper cup selection. Had to keep resetting, keep resetting, took all day to get 2 lowers in.

slymer 02-23-2010 12:09 PM

yeah.. the lowers area real buggers to get done. You may also have some weak bushings that may be allowing the control arm to bump the frame or bolts. There may be a few other points to check as well, but my brain is not picking them out at the moment.
