I had a 2002 Mountaineer and loved it. I purchased a 2004 in May and have had nothing but problems with this vehicle. Problems included transmission banging into gear, fuel line problem (stalled and broke downon NJ turnpike),high pitch whistle while driving, and steering and wheel problems.


I am basically wondering if anyone else has had numerous problems with this vehicle? I basically am in the service center every 3 weeks with something new. I would do anything to go back and not have purchased this vehicle.

We just purchased a Newer used Mountaineer 03 w/ 20,000 miles. Recently , took this vehichle on a ski trip. Road conditions were very bad. The mountaineer handeled very well ,BUT harsh , and excessive shifting between 50 - 60 mph almost had us turning back.


This is the only time we noticed the shifting issue. Good dry roads do not seem to evoke the harsh /banging shifts. We are not sure this is the way its supposed to be.

As long as you are under you 36,000 mile warranty i would take the vehicle in for service.. They usally can replace the valve body and solenoid body and it should take care of the problem occasionally they need to update the pcm also..

We do have an appointment set for this week to have the vehichle checked for the shifting concerns. The service manager did mention the solenoid issue. Ive noticed several mentions of trans. fluid additives , or different fluids. Are these two issues connected ?

They are only for the 04/05 model years it was a screw up in the factory where a low quality or under specified fluid was added this was not a concern in 03.

There is another concern with this 03 Mountaineer. That is rough idle. Not sure if it is to low idle , but the 4.0 V6certaintly vibrates the cabin at idle. When I pop the hood the engine visibely shakes , and vibrates.


Recently the vehichle stalled while waiting for traffic signals to turn . Also, the on board MPG info center has not posted north of 16 MPG since we brought the vehichle home. The first 250 miles we posted 19.9-20.6 mpg on the highway. We have driven the vehichle close to 1000 miles in about 10 days. Mostly Highway.

I have had an ongoing problem with my 04 Mountaineer vibrating while driving and at idle since January. The dealership has replaced the brake rudders, rebalanced the tires and realigned the car, and replaced the drive shaft, but the car stilldrives lousy. Ialso had the problem with the transmission back in October. Can the ongoing vibration be related to any of these problems, or is the dealership overlooking a simple solution? The carwill nowvibrate the most while just sitting in park, but that sensation can be felt while driving. Any ideas would be so much appreciated. Thank you.
