Default Transmission shifting hard on reverse

Hi folks, I have a 05 Mountaineer Premier V6. At times when I shift to the reverse gear it tends to take the gear pretty hard. I had a similar issue about a year & a half ago but at a worse level. It would really shift hard when it took the gear. The dealer told me it was a bad solenoid in the tranny so they changed it & had to reset the computer. Damage was about $400 - $450 if I remember correctly.

The problem seems to be coming back but at a moderate pace. It doesn't always happen. I really don't want to spend this amount again for a re-occurring problem.

Any tips and/or is this a common problem with the mountaineer?

I have a 90 Bronco with a 5.7 and an auto tranny. It is shifting really hard when going from park to reverse or drive and from 1st to 2nd. You can feel a big clunk when it does it. Anyone have any ideas on what it could be besides needing rebuilt or is it time for a rebuild?

if the engine idle is too high, it'll do that in reverse and drive. also check the transmission cable to make sure it's connected properly to the throttle if it's not computer controlled.

if the idle is where it should be and everything else looks fine, then it may be time for a rebuild.

Well finally took the time & took the Mountaineer to the dealer. Problem was again the tranny solenoid pack. The warranty had expired on the previous job by like 6 months. I argued with the mechanic supervisor that there was no reason why the same problem should have re-occurred. He explained that the 1st time the job was done I did not request for the fluid to be changed as well & that "might" have caused to problem to re-occur. After going back & forth that it wasn't recommended to me to also have the fluid changed they ended up giving me a discount which saved me about $300 but still ended up spending about $900+. Pissed me the f**k off!. Now it’s shifting very smooth. Good as new.

Every shop I know of (good ones that is) will change the fluid and filter on the trans for ANY service done to it. I find it hard to believe that the pack can be changed without changing the fluid.

Default Transmission Service

When in doubt -- Drop the Trans Pan !!
1. Change the FILTER(s).
2. Install a Shift Kit.
3. Install Drain Plug.
4. RE-USE original pan gasket.
5. Re-fill with MERCON V Trans Fluid.
Change Filter at 35,000-mile intervals.
DO NOT OVER-FILL !!
