Default whinding sound

I recently took a 1000 mile trip, when i got home, i noticed a whinding sound coming from around the a/c compressor. My belt is a little old, but not sure yet if that is what it is. wondering if anyone has had this problem and what they did to fix this. the sound is almost like i am running a supercharger. would like to get input before i start taking things apart, and am also thinking about removing the a/c compressor and putting on a bypass pulley. any imput on that option would be appreciated-also anyone know of any performance changes due to this, looking for a little more horse if possibe.
thanks
