I just got a 2003 mercury mountaineer premier w/ the 4.0 v6flex....I love this thing, its got awesome response, low miles (43K), well maintained interior leather, and I practically stole the thing for $9950 from someone who couldnt make the payments. I just put a KNN intake on it today, sounds good but doesnt sound as good as I thought it would. Anyone know of any other customizations I can do to make this thing better? I'm having trouble finding performance mufflers, but ive found cat-backs. I dont wanna do anything too outragous. The only thing wrong with this merc is that the wheels are pitted really bad, after winter ill get some new wheels for it. Anyone have any cool ideas?

 

generally, if you really wanna get a nice note out of it, you'll need to put shorty headers and 2.5" duals (with an H pipe behind the cats) out the back. That will probably be a custom job all the way unless you can find some bolt-ons for that. summitracing.com is a good place to start looking since they have a pretty good stock of almost everything. as for wheels, everyone's taste differs. I'm still running all stock wheels on my rides because I'm the utilitarian type as far as wheels are concerned. only upgrade if you've upgraded the power beyond the handling of that size. I would say not to upgrade to really large rims though. keep at least 4 inches of sidewall to allow for the occational pothole and curb hop.
