Default Replacing rear LED tail light

I have a really nice 2005 Mercury Montego with low mileage. Recently the passenger rear tail light/brake light stopped working. (back up light and turn signal are still functioning) Went to the auto part store to get what it might need. But was told 'non-user-serviceable' because it's not just changing out a bulb or two. It's a damn 'LED light panel assembly'? Looking for suggestions so I don't get screwed over.
BTW: My late father was a Master Mechanic. He wrote all the technician certification tests required in the state of Michigan. Everything from 2-cycle toys to big rigs and heavy equipment.. I'm an only child, so he taught me anything I asked him about, and then some! Sure does come in handy when I've taken vehicles in for servicing! Trying to play me like some dumb broad in a bra.... HA! But he has since passed away, and these light assemblies came after. So educate me on this subject!
***Thanks everybody!!***
