My daughter has a 2000 Mercury Sable Wagon. Both rear seatbelt retractors will not release. This happened within one week of each another. They are stuckretracted and she needs at least one of these belts to hold her sons car seat.

Any suggestions on how to fix this problem? If it means tearing the car apart and replacing the retracors, where can I look at an online manual to see how this is done?

Thanks for your help.

gaining access to the retractors should be just removing the rear seat and the side moldings (if shoulder belts). To remove the rear seat, simply lift up on it until it pops free (there may be one bolt at each end near the doors holding it down. I''m guessing since I''ve never actually worked on a sable wagon, but I figure it''s the same as the 99 sedan.) The seat belt retractors should be bolted to the floor. I don''t know if any have some kind of reset switch, or whether you would be able to take the cover apart and see if some random piece of clitter is jamming the mechanism, but you should be able to remove the faulty ones easily after removing the seat.
