I have a Mercury Sable 94, and it has 200.000 km on it, but still it is fine. I have one major problem which is the engine is sometimes getting high and low while shifting the gear, causing the car to downshift very hard and while shifting to reverse gear, I get some hard bump, like bang sound. The problem is that sometimes it goes very fine and sometimes all this happens. My RPM shows that the car shifts irritatingly from time to time, and the engine is getting sometimes high, so while stopping at a signal light the car brakes like sloppy. I thought first that this is because of the brakes, but when I checked it there is no problem. Then when I try to stop the car while the gear in the (N) position the car stops smoothly.

I feel that something between the engine and the gear is happing but I don't know what is it? Is it the sensor, air filter, gear problem, engine problem or what?

Any idea to solve this puzzle.

unfortunatly to me it sounds like you have have something going away on you inside the transmission if you got that many miles out of that trans without replacement you did go those year transmissions were know for having failure problems...

depends alot on where your at and what you want to have done and what it needs... youll have 2 options to overhaul or to replace with a reman unit. cost to replace a front wheel drive transmission is usally in the neighborhood of 2800-3500 and a overhaul can run between 2200-3500 depending on what has gone away inside.

very hard to say depends on what the problem is.. at 200,000km its really your own call as if the car is worth it 2 you or if you can afford to get something newer

Just to chime in,the valve package/solenoid assy.is usually the cause in CD4E/AX4N/AXOD Ford trannys. The solenoid pack and valve assy. are fairly difficult to change if you have never done one before. I would suggest getting a diagnostic run on the tranny to see if there are any "soft" codes. If the tranny is shifting that bad due to a sensor, the code will be apparent only in the PCM. A 94 is an OBDI compliant vehicle and will not necessarily illuminate the "check engine light". An OBDII vehicle will.(96 +). If there are any soft codes in the pcm,the tech will be able to pinpoint the problematic area. Just because the tranny is shifting hard doesn't always mean it needs a total repair.

that is a possiblitly but without knowing the condtion or treatment of the vehicle before ownership and the mileage there could also be damage inside of the transmission. also those tranmission were well known for failure
