Default Transmission

We have a 97 Cougar XR7 V6 and I think the transmillion is gone. The only gear that the car will move in is reverse. The car has only 131156 miles on it and only 10000 from us. I think the car had been setting along time on the lot with out moving. My question: We will have to fix it on way or another (sell or keep).
Thanks

trans rebuild can cost from $800 to $2500 depending on how much needs replacing (the low end for just clutches and soft parts which is what it sounds like yours needs - maybe some plates as well since the clutches are pretty much gone at least and have probably damaged the plates but this shouldn't add much to it). weigh the cost of another car vs the cost of a transmission rebuild. Most shops can give you a ballpark like what I have posted here to let you know how much it will generally cost. Do keep in mind that hard parts like the pump, gears, valve body, torque converter, etc will boost the price by quite a bit.
