Thanks, I will pass this on to themechanic that is checking on the problem now. I have the car at an indipendent shop - I couldn't handle the charges from the dealership. Hope this can be resolved soon.

Windzer,
I think the neutral safety switch would cause the car not to crank. This one cranks but won't start

Are you sure the starter is engaging the flywheel the 99-00 cougars did have problems with starter flywheel engagment. Unfortunatly the fix was to replace the starter and the flywheel. Also when it doesnt start and just cranks has anyone checked for spark?

I've also have heard about the fuel tank warpping causing the same problem, does it ever happen with a full fuel tank?

I don't think it ever happened with a full tank, it did happen the last time with 3/4 tank. I am passing all these suggestions on to the mechanic that is trying to find the problem. Biggest problem is that it has not happened with him in over a week.

Thanks so much for all these ideas - if I ever get it fixed I will be sure to report the findings. Harold
