Default '99 rear axle play

My '99 Marquis is making clunking noise when hitting bumps, like someone tapping a 5 gallon bucket. Checked the rear and the drivers side rear wheel has some play in it, up and down and side to side. About 1/8", is this from bad/going bad axle bearing? Does this axle come off with bolts or clips from inside?

He didn't say anything about the gear ratio. What he said was that NASCAR should take a look at several teams, not just the two you bring up, because teams are turning the rear housing to yaw out the rear of the cars which creates more side force helping with cornering. NASCAR's stance is that teams are allowed a 1/4 inch either way and all the teams experimenting with this setup are within limits.
