Default Driver side window inop

2003 Sable:

Driver side window works sometimes and sometimes not. An older thread on here was experiencing the same problem and owner had fuse box and GEM replaced but no further information. Ford says the GEM is obsolete and they cannot fix the problem.

Does anyone know (1) is this GEM available in the aftermarket and (2) do they need to be programmed for the car in any way? In other words, can I get an aftermarket unit, or even a used one from an identical Mercury, and replace the current GEM without having to do anything other than replace the unit?

Thanks for any help.
Dale

Dale - consider the control buttons? Had the same problem on my 85 and bought a replacement switch assembly for only a few bucks at a parts store. Maybe worst case scenario is worn brushes in the motor that are getting hung up in their holders and not making contact with the motors' armature when activated?

Definately not the switch or any parts of it. Ford replaced that ($280), didn't work, then said a 'pin' was loose - fixed that twice, then said fuse box and GEM were bad. After quoting me a price on the fuse box they then came back and said the GEM wasn't available any longer and, essentially, I was out of luck. I believe it is indeed the GEM because now when it doesn't work I can gently squeeze the bottom of the fuse box/GEM and it'll work.

I found a dealer 100 miles away that says the GEM is available and can have it in one day. I believe that when my dealer saw the price of the GEM (over $500) and they quoted me a little under $400 for the fuse box and GEM, they chickened out and lied to me about the GEM being available.

Still don't know if a new or used GEM needs to be 'programmed' in any way and that's my question now.

How about checking the fuse blades that connect to the fuse? A loose connection? Not familiar with the "GEM" - what is it?

The GEM is the General Electric Module that piggybacks on the fuse box and controls essentially all electrical systems in the car from windows to door locks, remote key fob, lights, etal.
