Howdy Folks,
New to the page, but definitely not new to the body style. I am 20 y/o and started out in a 2000 lincoln town car, now that I have moved to a 09 marquis, I am looking for tips on the vehicle. I would like to remove the speed governor, 02 sensors, and rear air ride from the computer. It gets quite annoying having to remove the notification from my screen every 10 miles or so. But other than that I am wanting to upgrade it, such as, rear end, trans, fully tuned to e85, cam, and redo the valves. I am looking for suggestions for what everyone else has done to their Marquis.
Upgrades currently done to the car:
2 15in Fi BL on vfl5k
2 runs of 0/2 welding power
2 runs of 0/2 welding ground to frame
45a/h cmaxx w/front battery delete
370 amp Brand X Alt
Kenwood Double Din w/all. 4 6x8 replaced with Kenwood(soon to be changed with complete interior audio setup)
I have no performance upgrades or such done to it at this time, but before I keep upgrading the audio I want to help prolong the health of the car itself. I'm looking for any and all help on how to keep it running strong. I have 130k nearing 140k on it with the 4.6l Flex Fuel, wanting to switch it to full e85.
I'm not too smart with cars, but I know my way around and typically my car does not go to a shop and I do it myself. So all information is helpful and appreciated.
Rear air ride has been swapped out to springs before I bought it, plan to keep it springs with air shocks, but it has full air ride capability(as in the compressor and lines are there all the way to the back)
Thanks in advance,
Josh
P.s. I'm an HVAC tech, so it might be a minute before. I respond...
Hello Josh, and welcome to the Mercury Forums --
From your post, it appears that you're trying to make a Hot Rod out of a 2-ton Highway Cruiser, and it will not work out the way you expect.
Why switch to "All E-85" ?? It's generally more expensive, and has less "power" than 87 Octane Regular Unleaded gasoline.
Generally, your fuel mileage will suffer with the "All E-85" fuel. Yes, the E-85 burns cleaner, but the difference in performance offsets the air quality gain in most areas of the USA. Restoring your engine to it's original specs and proper maintenance of the Emissions System will insure maximum air quality.
Air Shocks ?? Good for adjusting ride height when the vehicle is FULLY LOADED, but worthless at ALL other times.
"Speed Governor" removal ?? That's kid stuff -- your stock Merc tops out at 110 -- that's fast enough to get your a$$ arrested in any of our 50 glorious states, as well as Canada and Mexico.
Remove O2 Sensors !?? NOT a good idea -- those sensors are parts of the system that keeps your engine running smooth and strong.
Deleting the O2 Sensors will NOT improve performance in ANY situation -- DON'T do it !!
Rear End "Upgrade" ?? -- Your stock gear ratio is a 2.73-to-1, which yields 80 mph @ 2000 rpms. Putting in a "shorter" gear ratio will kill fuel mileage, and will NOT cut your elapsed time by very much at the drag strip -- not worth the time and expense.
You may want to STRENGTHEN your differential, which can be done inexpensively with a cast-aluminum Differential Cover that has jack-bolts to allow bearing pre-load. Recommended diff gasket = LubeLocker, with 75-90 Royal Purple gear oil.
Stock Transmission can be modded at home -- B&M Shift Kits have worked well for me, on two AODE trannies and a C-6.
Trans shifts quicker, with less lag between shifts and a difference you can FEEL.
You claim 130-140 thousand miles on your rig -- too many to undertake major engine mods -- the expense of changing cams and valves is prohibitive, because you will NEVER get a decent return on your investment.
Best all-around performance mod for the Grand Marquis = Dual exhausts, with H-Pipe and 2" MagnaFlow Glasspax, 2" Tailpipes -- yields max power (22-24 HP) at minimum cost.
Walker H-Pipe; MagnaFlow 2" Glasspax ; Walker Tailpipes -- Adds 22-24 Horsepower over stock (single) exhaust. 8.8" Differential Cover, LubeLocker Gasket, Royal Purple 75W90 Gear Oil
The 95 MERC now has 167,000 miles on the clock -- 16 City, 24 Highway -- Excellent annual emissions test results.
87 Octane Chevron Gasoline, 5-W-30 Full Synthetic (Not Blended) Engine Oil, Bosch Double-Iridium Spark Plugs.
