My grand marquis 1997 model overdrive button is not working. I checked in one workshop. They told me to check by auto electrician. The auto electrician told me that he will open the dashboard to see if the button is faulty? OR there may be problem in the gears? Selenoids?

May I ask the geeks, what will happen if it is not working? What is this overdrive for?
A detailed answer will be highly appreciated.

 

The button for the overdrive is to turn the overdrive off (not allow the trans to shift into 4th gear) Default setting is for the OD to be on (everytime you shut the car off and turn it back on the OD is on) ALot of people like to turn the OD off (and only let the trans shift into D or 3rd gear) for towing or decending a steep grade.


If the OD light is not on or flashing then chances are it is just a problem with the switch in the shifter.. Other than not being able to disable the OD this will cause no problems... OF the OD light is on or flashing or if you have any other shifting problems then there is something more serious that you will want to have checked out...
