Default shift cable

My 1992 grand marquis went from bad to worse but no body could tell me what may be problem@#$%% After examining the transmission end I found the cable was moving very easily with the lever in park and the key out when removed from transmission?? I then took off the panels below steering wheel and found that one screw had fallen out of the shift assembly and the other was ready to fall out. I'm in the process of adding a STAR washer and some locktite to the screws and using a #30 torx bit torque them back this should fix my shift problem. What upsets me is the lack of information in the Haynes and the Chiltons manuals as they mention NOTHING about the end inside the car.
