96 mercury grand marquis, ~60k
I thought timing chain last much longer than belt.

I checked ford service manual for vc/gm, it turns out:
60k ( and 120k): replace timing chain/belt(6268)

When do you guys change the timing chain? and how much it costs?

Thanks.

I have never replaced a timing belt. I can't understand why you would unless the timing was off...

No GM has a timing belt AFAIK. These cars use a timing chain. The chain should last way over 100K miles, probably more like 150K miles, depending on maintenance, etc..

Engines using timing belts typically need to have the belt replaced every 60K miles. But, again, that's not a GM.

ALL 4.6 liter FOMOCO engines employ a timing CHAIN.
Using Mobil 1 XP 5w30 oil and Motorcraft oil filters, my 1995 4.6 engine gives excellent performance, economy, and reliability.
Recent Smog Test results at 148,000 miles:
Hydrocarbons - Standard is 220 ppm. Passed at 38 ppm.
Carbon Monoxide - Standard is 1.5% . Passed at 0.032%.
At 62,000 miles, your timing chain is barely broken in ;>)
