Default 1959 Mercury Monterey (Engine Help Please)

Ok so I am very new to the Monterey I've always loved them and I finally have got the chance to pick one up. I would like to start fixing the engine a little, it runs but it has a few problems. The problem im having now is I have no idea what engine I have, does anybody have a clue? Thank You so much.. Included is a few pics of the engine. its a 4 door

Your '59 Monterey came with 3 different V-8 engines available:
312 cu. in.
383 cu.in.
430 cu.in.
Yours appears to be the 312 cu.in. V-8.

If you check the vin the first letter tells you what engine it was manf with. L is 439, M is 383, N is 383 2 brl, p is 312.
