Alternator Removal 1998 V-6
#2
First release the tension on the belt and remove. Then move anything that is hampering you from getting to the alt. bolts. Don''t forget to take the neg. batt. terminal off before you start. Good luck!

I know this is a bit late, but for those searching in the future...
The V-6 Mystique is a tricky one. Here''''s what I''''ve done:
CRITICAL NOTES:

The alternators were VERY tough on these cars. Aftermarket units will typically FAIL within a few weeks, if not within a few hours. Don''''t waste your money on them, get Ford factory in this case. I''''m all for saving money, but this is one of the few areas where saving on parts is a very bad idea.

When you re-install start with the lower bolt but don''''t tighten it untilyou use the pivot trick to get the upper ear into position, then use the 10mm bolt to snug the bracket to the engine block & the upper ear will slide into place on it''''s own. Don''''t frustrate yourself trying to do this by hand, let that little 10mm bolt do the work for you.

Be certain you get the bolts all tightened up. So much up & down, over/under the car that it''''s easy to forget one.
Took me about 4 hours first time I did one of these on my Contour. The Mystique replacement took under 1 hour since I had soooo much practice with aftermarket alternators on the Contour. Edited by: TourDeForce
