My car has been making an awful high pitched whistling sound coming from somewhere under the hood. It seems to be anytime the car is on, regardless of if I am accelerating or not. When I am idle, it is really loud. I just want some opinions on what it is before I break down and take it in to the shop. Thanks.

Is the vehicle a 4 or 6 cylinder? And does it go away when it warms up?

Check belt tensioner on 2.0 4cyl. depending on mileage probably still under warranty.

check the belt or belts for tension. if they're ok a water pump , alternator, or even a power steering pump will whine when they are starting to go.
