92 GS Sable Poor MPG
Hello everyone,
Im new to this forum, but a regular in the Honda and Chevy forums. Ok, here it is... My mom has a 92 GS Sable with 32K original miles, yes 32K miles. it has the 3.8 engine, her Mpg is awful, a tank of fuel will last her appx 100 miles. she states that it was tuned up recently by a local shop, and that there are NO CEL lit, or have come up on the dash. Im in NC and she is in Flordia, so Im am fishing before I drive there with my Mechanic Chest in the back of my P/U to tear into her car. Any questions that you have I will do the best I can to answer them, if not I will find out when I talk to her daily.
I know I am giving limited info, but I will keep all posted as info continues to come in.
Thanks

@4realb...... No, Mom states the car idle smooth, no miss, and runs perfect in all temps. starts everytime and runs like a top. just burns way to much fuel. she drive around town, she's in a small town in Tampa, so she has to drive to Tampa...

She needs to take it back to the "mechanic" who tuned it up & have him fix whatever he did wrong, so you don't have to drive all that way and tune him up. I get absolutely incensed when I hear about people being treated this way and there is no excuse for it. Not sure what was done for the "tune up" but he may have set her timing on the low side. That will reduce power and cause drivers to be always adding more throttle, thus burning more fuel. Also, have her check when she first turns the key to make sure the CEL comes on. The bulb may have burnt out or been removed. You may also want to make sure the parking brake is not set. People who don't use it rarely check to make sure its not set, so if the mechanic set it, but she doesn't normally use it, she might be dragging the back brakes. (Not saying anything about your mother, we've all done this, myself probably more than most.) Good luck to you, happy Independence Day and Semper Fi, brother.
