The engine light is on in our 2003 Mercury Sable and althought it passes the Smog portion of the California smog test a new 2009 tage cannot be issued because the ''Engine Warning Light'' is on. Car is performing normally, but the ''engine light'' is on. What is most likely causing this??

There are tons of issues which could cause that.


Hint: if the fuel cap is not locked/sealed properly, the light will come on. According to the Taurus manual, after tighened, it takes 3 starts/turn offs before the light is supposed to go off.
