Default Gas cap light on 2002 Sable

Hi folks

new to the forum and relatively new Mercury owner. A month back the gas cap dash light came on after filling. In subsequent fills I've replaced the gas cap the right way but the warning light has stayed on since and hasn't gone away. The manual says if you don't fix the issue, the engine light will come on, and it has - the two codes are P0455 and P0457 from the OBDII reader I have.

Is this a common problem, and is it a sensor on the gas cap itself? The cap is on the right way, I've checked it a bunch of times, so maybe the cap is broken or there's a sensor issue here? Just wanted to see if anyone had this experience before I take it to a shop to diagnose.

Did you reset the error code with the diagnostic tool after replacing the cap?

This was a while ago; the code was reset after the cap was replaced and the error code hasn't returned.
