Hi all. This is my first post on thie forum. I hope I can get some help here. My wife has a 1999 sable with the high output engine. Recently whenever she starts the car the engine seems to rev above 1600 RPM, then after a couple of minutes will drop down to aroud the 700 RPM. Is this the work of some sort of censor or what>

It could be a few things:

1) Vacuum leak when cold that stops when the engine is heated up.
2) Bad or dirty Idle Air Control valve (common problem on these vehicles).
3) Carboned up throttle body.
4) Bad engine coolant temp sensor or air temp sensor.

What's the gas mileage like? If the mileage is bad, I'd head right for the vacuum leak or the sensors.
