I was driving back to VA from my Christmas in Florida and my Sable started slowing down til it eventually stopped when we pulled over on the side of I-95 the engine cuts on no problem and revs but when i try to put it in drive or any other gear I get no response it doesnt go into gear and i cant feel the pull from the linkage when i pull on the shifter. This is a 2000 LS premium model and I was wondering if anyone has had a similar problem or any ideas the car made no noise or indication of stress so I''m really lost right now.

check the transmission. fluid, shifter linkage. If it sprung a leak and all the fluid ran out, you''re probably in for a rebuild because something is bound to be burnt up in there. It should only be soft parts (clutches) and maybe the pump. If it''s just the shifter linkage, then it probably slipped into neutral and then the cable broke/slipped/came undone. Hopefully it''s just the linkage. Much easier and cheaper fix.

How many miles those this car has first. Now, comes the bad news, I had a older model with the same problem and the tranny was gone.Get it analized by someone that knows about this tranny before getting it rebuilt.

I agree with Slymer, sounds like your clutches are burned up. But if the linkage or cable gave out it would of stayed in drive. Did you smell the fluid when you checked it (engine running and up to temp) to see if it smelt burnt? Does your car have an O/D on/off indicator on the inst. cluster? If so, have you ever seen it blink. What about any prior transaxle glitches? Your trans will produce and store trouble code like the engine.
