Hello everyone,

I was wondering what the average rpm speed is at when doing 65 mph. I had recently purchased a used 1999 Mercury Sable with the 24 valve 6cyl motor and currently she runs at around 2500 which I think is high. It sounds like it does run through all the gears when shifting. Also when I turn the car off there is a whining sound that slowly slows down like a fan running or something. I guess what I'm really interested in knowing is what everyone else's rpm is at and different speeds.

Thanks

Sounds to me like the vehicle may not be shifting into overdrive on average the car should be around 1800-2000 at 65

That's what I initially thought but when driving I downshifted into Drive and the transmission did respond. I guess I'm curious what other 24 valve Taurus/Sable owners what there RPM is showing at 55mph, 65mph, or 75mph. So I have something to compare it to.

Thanks for the response!

mine is a 95, dont know how many valves, but its the 3.0 V-6 EFI

2000 on the dot makes 65, 2500-2700 makes 90-95, 3000 makes 100+

so far my top speed was 160 and gas pedal wasn't on the floor, inch
from, give r take a tiny bit, if i remember correctly it was running
between 3500-4000 RPM

MAX rpm is 5500-6000

durring takeoff i hit 5250 rpm before a gear switch

and i make 75 in second gear at 5000-5250 rpm

this a response to masterxs' nascar built sable. there is no sable that would 160 mph. if your speedo only goes to 85 or 120 how do you even know? without acompletely modified engine, z-rated tires, upgraded brake and suspension kits, gear changes, i'm positive your car would disinergrate at those speeds anyway. you even have the smaller v-6 offered that year.(3.0L VS. 3.8L)better recheck your numbers. if your gas pedal was still an inch from the floor at 160 mphyou couldset some over 200 mphtop speed records at the salt flats. hey schluppy, just put the car in o.d. and count the gear changes there should be four. i have 1997 with electronic o.d. which is a little button on shifter ****. the noise you hear when you shut the car off is the electric fan or fans coming to a stop. open your hood at different times when driving and see if the fans are always running. if so you need a temp sensor or a new fan switch. good luck.Edited by: conan312

you need to see this one then, i got my friend to stauy with me in his 89 mustang, i aint saying the sable has the accelleration, but it got there beleive me, just took some time. he stayed equal with me and his mustang has an entire custom gage setup, his tach goes to 9000 and spedo to 180.

he stayed equal with me and after we stopped he says we barely made 160, my RPM was at 4000 basically,

since the last post, i have managed to plow out my fuel pump, i think from to much high speed driving, i now have toi stay at 2000 rpm or higher or it dies..... pump thegas and tunr key on and off few times , the pump still works for the pre-pressure before starting but shuts off within minutes of getting going.....

a 1989 5.0 mustang does not have top speed near 160. call ford and ask them. then tell them how fastyour sable is and whatthe three switches do. where are the two other switches for the nitrous tank? ya know, one for the tank warmer and another for purging? what is an electric super charger? with all these mods you should of smoked that mustang!!!

conan you need to check your knowledge bud, i dont have 10,000 dollors parts in my car, and i dont have nos, and i dont have any purging, i have 2 electric superchargers, 3.0L V6, and no rev limiters.... where the mustangs tranny may be tuned for accel, mine is not, that musty will smoke me a new one on takeoff, but where by his gearing is for acceleration mines for speed....

hey master , why don't you read your response to ollie and hisquestion on mods for his sable. was that something you forgot that you wrote? transmissions in mustangs are not geared for acceleration, their rear differentials are. you best check your knowledge bud. and please tell me what an electric supercharger is and how you have two of them installed on your sable. check with ford and compare your top tranny gear ratio ( o.d. ) to his mustang. tell me how your sable is geared for speed, or did you mean top speed? I understand how your buddy with the 'stang could of slapped some 4:11's in his rear for some better low end but then his speedo would be way off. did he recalibrate his speedometer gearing before he told you that your sable was doing 160 m.p.h.? i have lots more questions if you have answers.
