1990 Sable 3.0 V6, about 108,000 miles. My battery went dead so I jumped it. It worked fine for a couple of milesand it started to die again.Just as this was happeningmy tachometer went nuts and jumped back and forth and then made a full revolution. The car died. The needle is now positioned under the small needle stop. It never came back around. It falls about 1" when the key is off then jumps up and hits the stop when the key is on. I replaced the battery and then the alternator but the tach needle did not reset itselfHow do I reset it?

You need to remove the stop pin so it can get back. It might be easier to get a new cluster from tour local junkyard.

No, it repaired itself. One day afterI shut the engine offI watched the needle slowly crawl itself back to the correct setting. I think it's something with the computer. It might be a diagnostic tool to let you know there is something wrong with your charging system, then it resets itself after so many start-ups.

sounds to me like you got lucky that the cluster was able to reset the needle. usally when that happens you have to replace the cluster no questions asked. the computer really doesnt control anything except maybe your check engine light in an analog cluster.
