What year is your car? I would guess you need a new motor for you window. The one on this site is for a 99 cougar and its only like $35. http://www.carpartswholesale.com/cpw....php?make_text =mercury&ml=coug--012&model_text=cougar&year=199 9&part_name=window_motor&brand_name=a1_car done&s =1&my=1&repcat=true

In other research I've done on other forums I've found that they say there's a relay in the drivers door near the speaker which will cause this. I have the problem now with a twist. The drivers window won't go up or down but the passenger window will only go up on the passenger switch but will go up or down with the driver switch. Go figure. It would be nice to find a single solution. Relay sounds logical, I guess. BTW, I have a 2000 Cougar 2.5L V6

hm..sounds almost like the problems my Cougar has...except my passenger side's screwed up. sometimes i have to push the button a few times to get the passenger window to roll down. and when i roll it up, it works best with the passenger side button instead of the driver's side button. but yeah, what i'm goin to do is check my wires see if they need replaced and then check my relay...if none of those does it then it has to be the motor...so, i'd say try checking your wires/wire connections, and see if that's the problem.
