Default Gear Shifting when cold

After starting in the AM, it is almost impossible to make the shift handle go out of Park position.. Yes, we are stepping on the brake and pushing the side release button.. We have to push extremely hard on the side release button to move the shift handle..After the car has been driven and warmed up, it seems OK .. Where is the electrical switch that control this.. is it on the master cylinder. ? (97 Cougar)

sounds like the solenoid that releases the pin to allow the shift from park needs some lubricant. This is on the shifter itself.
