1966 mercury reverse lights

I'm not sure what you mean by took everything apart, the whole car, or the area around the back up lights.
First thing I would do is check the fuse.
Then see if you have power to the lights plug in.
If you have power to the lights plug in, then it has to be between there and the lights. How are the light bulb sockets, and a remote possibility, the bulbs themselves.
Then see if you have power to the neutral/reverse switch.
If you have power to the Neutral/reverse switch, pull the plug on the switch & use a jumper wire to jump the 2 plug contacts together.
If they now work, you either have a bad neutral/reverse switch or its out of adjustment with the shift linkage.
