4.6 liter intake manifold

We all know the plastic intake had problems and they recalled them but i'm curious how many people still have the original and how many miles. will they all leak and crack or do some last. Mines original 69000 miles but afraid when it will crack on me. should i just replace it. Too late for recall its a 96 and they only go 7 years i guess. Is this true?

Mine '97 GM blew it's intake at 97K miles. My Dad's '96 Cougar blew at 47K miles but his car was 10 years old at the time (he doesn't drive it much).
Your '96 is too old to be covered by the "recall" which isn't really a recall but more like an extended warranty.
You can do the repair yourself pretty easily in about 4 hours and a new, improved manifold can be had for $200. I've done both my car and my Dad's and it's not too hard.

Thanks for the reply. I looked at the website and it details the fix very well. Soon as the weather gets warmer I think I'll replace it just to be safe. Doesnt look to be that hard of a job.

When I replaced mine I also put in new spark plugs. It's also a good
time to replace the heater hose that runs under the intake manifold.

Doesnt matter now the engine went. Drove this car 1000 miles after i bought it flawlessly. Ran perfect. One day i go to start it it cranks slow then nothing. I jump it and it starts but the engine is knocking real bad. Really knocking loud like something broke internal. I shut it walked away and cried. No wonder they are losing millions. They build junk........

There are a few million Mercury owners that have had no such problems as you describe.
As for your problem--
When the motor stopped cranking, you should have pulled the spark plugs to release any internal pressure in the cylinders, which was probably caused by a coolant leak into the combustion chamber.
And NO, Mercury did NOT build junk, and it's not their fault that their cars sometimes fall into the hands of ignorant people.
